About Walkertown
Walkertown is named for the Walker family, who settled here in the late 1700s; Robert Walker was living at the site by 1771. Love's Methodist Church was organized around 1791 and the Roanoke and Southern Railroad arrived in 1888. The Walkertown Sanitary District, formed in 1955 to run a public water system, became the incorporated Town of Walkertown on August 22, 1984.
Walkertown covers about 6.7 square miles in northeastern Forsyth County, northeast of Winston-Salem. US 311, US 158 and NC 66 run through the area, and the town keeps a mix of in-town neighborhoods, farmland and woods.
What Walkertown property owners should know
For septic owners, the property type matters. Walkertown homes range from older houses near Main Street to brick ranches and newer subdivisions on former farmland. Clay subsoil drains slowly, so drain fields here can struggle after long wet spells, especially on lots near Lowery Mill Creek and the other small creeks that run through the area. Keep cars off the field, pump on a schedule, and watch for soggy spots or odors downhill of the tank.
Walkertown's zoning is handled through the town and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County planning office, and Forsyth County Environmental Health issues septic permits for homes not on public sewer. A local provider can tell you whether your job needs a permit.
Parts of Walkertown we cover
Requests come from across Walkertown, including the town center along Main Street, the neighborhoods off US 311 and US 158, and the rural land toward Sullivantown. ZIP codes: 27051. Nearby, we also connect owners in Winston-Salem, Kernersville.
Walkertown has public sewer in the central part of town, but many homes farther out rely on private septic systems, and Forsyth County Environmental Health issues those permits. If you are not sure which you have, a water or sewer bill is the quickest clue. Homes near Lowery Mill Creek and the other small creeks should watch for wet ground over the drain field after long rains.
