About Randleman
Randleman began around Peter Dicks's grist mill on the Deep River, founded in 1800. The Union Factory cotton mill followed in 1848, and after mill owner John Banner Randleman died in 1879, the town was chartered on March 29, 1880, as Randleman Mills, named in his memory. By 1890 it was the largest town in Randolph County. Randleman is also known as the home of NASCAR's Petty family.
Randleman sits on rolling ground along the Deep River in northern Randolph County. Randleman Lake, a 3,007-acre reservoir on the Deep River run by the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority, opened in 2010 and supplies drinking water across the Triad. Land that drains to the lake is in a water-supply watershed, where a 50-foot buffer protects streams, ponds and the lake shore.
What Randleman property owners should know
For septic owners, the property type matters. Randleman homes range from mill-village houses and older homes near Main Street and the Deep River to brick ranches and newer homes on rural lots outside town. Clay subsoil drains slowly, so drain fields here can struggle after long wet spells, especially on lots near the Deep River and the streams that drain to Randleman Lake. Keep cars off the field, pump on a schedule, and watch for soggy spots or odors downhill of the tank.
Randleman handles zoning inside city limits, Randolph County covers the land outside, and Randolph County Environmental Health issues septic and well permits for homes not on city sewer. A local provider can tell you whether your job needs a permit.
Parts of Randleman we cover
Requests come from across Randleman, including downtown along Main Street and the old Deep River mill district, the Naomi area just downstream, the land around Randleman Lake, and the rural roads toward Level Cross. ZIP codes: 27317. Nearby, we also connect owners in Liberty, Climax, Pleasant Garden, High Point.
Homes inside Randleman are generally on city sewer, but septic is common once you leave town: the rural roads toward Level Cross and much of the land around Randleman Lake are well-and-septic country, and Randolph County Environmental Health handles those permits. Routine pumping needs no permit, but replacing a tank or drain field needs a repair permit, and adding a pool, garage or other building on a septic lot needs an existing system authorization from the county. Near the lake and its feeder streams, new septic tanks and drain fields generally have to stay out of the 50-foot watershed buffer.
