About Sedalia
Sedalia took its name around the turn of the 1900s from the local postmaster, Robert Boston Andrew, who ran the post office in the back of his general store. In 1902 Charlotte Hawkins Brown founded Palmer Memorial Institute here, a nationally respected preparatory school for Black students. The campus is now the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum, a state historic site, and Sedalia was incorporated as a town in 1997.
Sedalia lies in eastern Guilford County between Greensboro and Burlington, off I-85/40 exit 135, with US 70 (Burlington Road) running through the southern part of town. The land is rolling Piedmont farmland and woods with red clay subsoil.
What Sedalia property owners should know
For septic owners, the property type matters. Sedalia homes are mostly houses on rural lots, from older farmhouses to brick ranches and newer homes. Clay subsoil drains slowly, so drain fields here can struggle after long wet spells, especially on lots near the small creeks and low spots that collect runoff between fields. Keep cars off the field, pump on a schedule, and watch for soggy spots or odors downhill of the tank.
Sedalia handles its own zoning, and since the town has no public sewer, Guilford County Environmental Health issues septic permits. A local provider can tell you whether your job needs a permit.
Parts of Sedalia we cover
Requests come from across Sedalia, including the area around the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum on US 70, the land near I-85/40 exit 135, and the rural roads across eastern Guilford County. ZIP codes: 27342. Nearby, we also connect owners in Whitsett, McLeansville, Burlington, Greensboro.
Sedalia has no public water or sewer system, and in 2022 residents pushed back on plans to build one, so private septic systems and wells will stay the norm here. That makes regular pumping and a working drain field part of owning any Sedalia home. Guilford County Environmental Health issues septic permits and repair permits.
