About Stokesdale
Stokesdale was first known as Green Pond, and later just Pond, after a swampy pond near today's Ellisboro Road and NC 65. When the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad came through in 1886, the depot and post office took the name Stokesdale. The town first incorporated in 1907, went inactive during the Depression, and was incorporated again in 1989.
Stokesdale sits in northwest Guilford County at the crossing of NC 68, US 158 and NC 65. Belews Lake, a Duke Energy reservoir popular for boating and fishing, lies just west of town, and most of the land around it is farmland, woods and homes on large lots.
What Stokesdale property owners should know
For septic owners, the property type matters. Stokesdale homes are mostly single-family houses on an acre or more, from older farmhouses and bungalows near the town core to newer subdivisions along NC 68, Haw River Road and Belews Creek Road. Clay subsoil drains slowly, so drain fields here can struggle after long wet spells, especially on lots near the small creeks and low, wet spots common on rural lots around town. Keep cars off the field, pump on a schedule, and watch for soggy spots or odors downhill of the tank.
Stokesdale handles its own zoning, and Guilford County Environmental Health issues septic permits and keeps system records for the town. A local provider can tell you whether your job needs a permit.
Parts of Stokesdale we cover
Requests come from across Stokesdale, including the town core along NC 68, the subdivisions off Haw River Road, Ellison Road and Belews Creek Road, and the rural land toward Belews Lake. ZIP codes: 27357. Nearby, we also connect owners in Oak Ridge, Summerfield, Kernersville, Greensboro.
In Stokesdale, septic is the rule, not the exception. The town has no public sewer, so nearly every home and business depends on its own tank and drain field. Keep sheds, pools and new driveways off the drain field, and keep pump-out records handy if you plan to sell.
